Sanriku AIR/AIR Yu Wakuta "Becoming a Newly Born Song"

Sanriku AIR/AIR is an artist-in-residence program that aims to support the creative work of artists based in theaters while they stay in Miyako City and the Sanriku region. In addition to creating a space for encounters between contemporary artists and the local community, the program conducts workshops, outreach programs, and presentations of the results of the residency, as well as providing activities such as cultural experiences unique to the Miyako and Sanriku regions and "learning about disaster prevention," aiming to create a positive cultural cycle between the community and the artists.

This performance is a showcase of the results of residency programs by artists selected through an open call, and can be enjoyed for just one coin (a small fee).
For the 2026 open call for entries, artist Yu Wakuta will focus on the short-lived poet Sachiko Nishito, researching the natural beauty of Miyako City as well as the Iwaizumi area where a monument to her remains. She will present a dance piece incorporating tanka poems she has written herself.
