Morioka City Pioneers Memorial Museum 73rd Special Exhibition: "The Spirit of Service: Kaizo Shibauchi"
In 2026, the 60th anniversary of Kaizo Shibauchi's death, we introduce Kaizo Shibauchi, the father of special needs education in Iwate Prefecture.
Kaizo Shibauchi was deployed to the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 (Meiji 37) and lost his sight in both eyes.
After retiring from military service, he enrolled in the teacher training course at the Tokyo School for the Blind and Deaf in 1909, at the recommendation of the school's principal, Shinji Konishi.
After graduating in 1911 (Meiji 44), with the cooperation of others, he founded the private Iwate School for the Blind and Deaf (now Iwate Prefectural Morioka School for the Visually Impaired and Iwate Prefectural Morioka School for the Hearing Impaired).
He also contributed to improving the lives of citizens by being involved in the establishment of the Morioka Waterworks Users' Association and the Morioka Hospital Limited Liability Purchasing and Sales Association (now Iwate Prefectural Central Hospital).
Please take this opportunity to learn about Kaizo Shibauchi, who dedicated himself to the good of society.
